More info
Are you a tunneller, bricklayer, blacksmith, rigger, millwright or sawyer? Do you have an interest in history?
The Brunel Museum are looking for people with experience of trades or construction work to help them tell the stories of historic workers who built the Thames Tunnel.
Over a series of workshops, we will explore the lives of historic workers, who they were, what they achieved, and the reality and dangers of their working conditions. Together, we will decide on how to best present these stories in the museum’s new permanent exhibition.
All participants will be paid London Living Wage for the time they commit to the project.
Anyone with experience of working in a trade or in construction. We would particularly like to work with people who have experience of the roles of historic workers who built the Thames Tunnel such as tunnellers, bricklayers, blacksmiths, riggers, millwrights or sawyers.
If you have construction experience that is not on this list but are still interested in being part of our project, then please do still apply.
What kind of commitment does the project involve?
Participants will be asked to take part in around 6 workshops over evenings
and weekends from July-December 2024.
All participants will be paid London Living Wage for the hours they attend
project meetings and will be given a £10 travel stipend for each in person
session. We won’t expect anyone to undertake work outside of these meeting
times.
What will I get out of the project?
You’ll be a part of transforming the museum for The Brunel Museum reinvented project.
You’ll meet and work with people with similar and different experiences to co-curate aspects of our new exhibition.
Your opinions and experiences will influence how the museum platforms working people’s histories and explores the legacies of the Thames Tunnel
Do you want to visit the museum to learn more?
Construction workers can claim free entry to the museum during July 2024 for themselves and any accompanying friends and family (for groups of up to 5 people).
