Presents from the Thames Tunnel

9 October - 26 April

From the moment the Thames Tunnel opened in March 1843 visitors flocked to experience the marvel of the world’s first tunnel under a river. Rather than treating it as solely a means to get from A to B, the public embraced the tunnel as an attraction in its own right, and it became a popular destination for day trips and excursions. Two million people visited in the first year it was open.

Many visitors wanted to mark their visit by purchasing a souvenir or a gift for friends and relatives. Frequently these items were marked ‘A Present from the Thames Tunnel’. Soon the presence of shops and stalls throughout the length of the tunnel became a key part of the experience.

Our new display showcases a varied range of souvenirs and keepsakes from the Thames Tunnel, from the simple to the luxury, and including fascinating Victorian optical entertainments.

Display included with museum admission – ask at front desk for more information.

The Brunel Museum wishes to thank Gill Howard for her generosity in making this display possible.
