MARCINIQUE: The Lost Island of Brunel 1790±3 – PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

Sat 19 & Sun 20

An allegorical map that plots the background, life and influence of the celebrated engineer, inventor and entrepreneur Marc Brunel. Designer of “The Eighth Wonder of the World” aka The Thames Tunnel.

In 1787, Marc volunteered for the French navy and was stationed in Martinique. Very little is known about this seminal and formative period of his life.

The map of the Lost Island of Marcinique, plots Marc’s life during his tour of duty in Les Petite Antilles. So come and explore the various locations, regions and phenomena found in and around this lost island. Peruse the Peninsular of the Past – Pirates, Privateers & Pieces of Eight. Traverse the Bay of Revolting Peasants. Visit the Grand Entrance to the Hades Hotel – aka The Thames Tunnel shaft.

As part of our Open House weekend, we are delighted to exhibit this splendid map by Peter Jones. Together with the gazetteer, Peter’s map not only plots Marc Brunel’s experiences and influence, but also the broader historical contexts that shaped him.
