About the Role
We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual to join our team on a zero-hours contract to support both museum operations and bar service. Depending on the Museum’s needs, you will work flexibly as a Casual Duty Manager or Bar Assistant. As a Duty Manager, you will support the running of the site and assist with visitors; as a Bar Assistant, you will contribute to the delivery of a wide range of events by providing excellent service across all Museum spaces, including the Roof Garden, Tunnel Shaft, Piazza, and Engine House. Responsibilities range from welcoming visitors and managing the daily opening and closing procedures, to supporting events and museum bar when needed. You will work closely with museum staff to ensure events, from weddings and private hires, run smoothly and professionally, offering all guests a warm and memorable experience.
Key Responsibilities
Casual Duty Manager
- Serve as the first point of contact for the Museum via phone, email, and in person.
- Open and close the Museum following procedures.
- Fill in end-of-day reports.
- Supervise and support volunteers during opening hours.
- Ensure the Museum spaces, including the shop area, are clean, well-stocked, and welcoming.
- Conduct toilet checks every two hours and complete the toilet check form.
- Take payments at the till and assist visitors with purchases.
- Provide a warm welcome and the highest standard of customer service to all visitors.
- Monitor building issues and visitor experience, reporting as needed.
- Be available for Duty Manager shifts on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, or on other days during school holidays, depending on Museum needs.
Bar Operations
Pre-Service Responsibilities:
- Set up the bar and garden area to be clean, welcoming, and fully stocked.
- Make sure glassware, equipment (iPads and card readers) and bar lighting are ready.
- Check the stock of wine, beer, and cider on ice. Prepare trays for service.
- Check the garden seating is clean, tidy, and comfortable for guests.
- Make sure bins are in place and ready for use.
During Service:
- Provide excellent, friendly customer service while serving drinks quickly and accurately.
- Keep the bar area clean and organised, restocking drinks, glasses, and supplies as needed.
- Monitor the garden area and toilets regularly to ensure cleanliness and comfort for guests.
After Service:
11 PM – late Closure:
- Clear and clean the bar and event spaces, ensuring everything is put away and ready for the next shift.
- Check all equipment is turned off, bins emptied and placed in the collection area, glassware cleaned and stored.
- Finish cleaning duties and ensure everything is locked, including the garden, and complete any closing procedures following the Museum’s guidelines.
Skills and Experience:
- Previous bar or FOH experience preferred but not essential.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Confident working independently and managing public-facing situations.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure.
- Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
- Flexibility and adaptability, as you may be required to work various shifts till late night.
- The job sometimes requires lifting heavy items and walking up and down stairs frequently, so you must be comfortable and physically able to do so.
- Understanding of working in cultural or heritage environments.
