We’re currently looking to recruit new volunteers in various roles across the Brunel Museum!

Our Learning Volunteers support our exciting range of schools and family activities — from our Tunnellers’ Club STEM sessions in the summer, to special on-gallery activities such as our Tunnellers’ Tales object handling, or the Discovery Walk around Rotherhithe delivered for school groups.
Responsibilities
Learning Volunteers help run our family and schools activities, engaging younger audiences in specially-designed activities.
- Provide a warm welcome for all family and school visitors to the Museum
- Support object-based learning using the Tunnellers’ Tales activity kit to spark conversations with families and other visitors
- Support on-site schools’ activities, including putting out props before the session starts, handing out booklets, answering questions
- Take care of own health and safety, escalating or alerting any health and safety related incidents to the Learning Producer in a timely manner
- Help clear up after activities, ensuring the Museum is returned to usual use
- Help maintain learning equipment, keeping the learning equipment cupboard tidy
- Undertake audience evaluation with family and school visitors
- Attend periodic training to develop and maintain skills, including mandatory training e.g. in safeguarding; and fire awareness.
Please note that volunteers working with children in any capacity will need to undergo a DBS check.
Skills and Qualifications
You don’t need specific skills, knowledge, or qualifications to be a Learning Volunteer.
For this role, these might include:
- Front of House skills
- Historical knowledge or interest
- Experience with children/teenagers
- Knowledge of accessibility

Time Commitment
- Volunteers are asked to be able to commit to at least one shift per month. The Museum is open to the public on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday each week for most of the year. We open each day during half-term, and on Saturdays and Sundays during November-January.
- School visits usually take place on Tuesday mornings: availability at these times would be beneficial.
- During half-term, the Museum opens every day and will require more Learning Volunteers.
- We ask volunteers to arrange their shifts in advance, to help with operational planning.

Interview Process
Everyone whose applications look promising will be invited for an informal interview with the staff member responsible for volunteers.
Interviews will take place the week commencing Monday 15 December, in person at the Brunel Museum. Please let us know in your application if there are any dates or times you cannot make.
This isn’t meant to be a scary process. There’s no need to wear formal clothing (unless you want to!).
