This print shows two pairs of men either side, in conversation in the tunnel, three of whom are wearing red jackets, one other in a black coat. The man in the black coat, wearing glasses and holding a paper and pen, appears to be Marc Brunel. It is likely the other figures represent other engineers on the project such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Richard Beamish.
This image was reproduced, notably, in editions of guidebooks to the Thames Tunnel, sold to those who visited the Tunnel works.
Beneath the image is the legend and maker’s mark: ‘Robert Cruikshank fecit, the Tunnel sketch’d by M. Dixie’.
