This print was produced for a commemorative dinner in the Thames Tunnel in 1997, given to a group of those who worked on the refurbishment of the Tunnel during the 1990s, during which the entire Tunnel was relined in shotcrete which recreated the original vaulted arches and other architectural features.
This banquet was a deliberate recreation of the well-known banquet of 1827, depicted in a painting now at Ironbridge Gorge (AE185.157). As shown in LDBRU:2026.2(b), attendees received a copy of this print alongside a paperweight encasing a brick core from the Tunnel (see LDBRU:2024.2).
