Wassail! Wassail! All over the town, Our toast it is white and our ale it is brown.
The Belles of London City (and friends!) welcome you to an underground wassail in Rotherhithe. Watch morris dancing on the museum’s piazza with mulled drinks – then follow the Belles down into the Tunnel Shaft where you’ll have the opportunity to learn a few dances yourself! Traditionally, the practice of wassailing was part of Yuletide celebrations and involved singing, dancing, and merrymaking – and in some parts of the country was aimed specifically at ensuring a good apple harvest for the coming year.
Event Schedule
1:00 PM – Doors open
1:30 PM – Event begins in the Engine House
1:45 PM – The Belles of London City will lead everyone into the Tunnel Shaft for a dance and wassail song workshop.
2:30 – 3 PM – Return to the museum garden for the traditional wassail dance and ceremony.
Throughout the event, the bar will be open in the Engine House, serving mulled cider, wine, and beer to keep everyone warm. We’ll also offer a spiced apple juice as a non-alcoholic option, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
