Steve has run Science Showoff, where scientists make fun of their work, since 2011 and it’s finally engineering’s turn to be made hilarious for one night only!
Shiv Kapila
Shiv is a PhD student in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He performs stand-up comedy in London and across the UK, and has appeared at Backyard Comedy Club, Angel Comedy Club and the Edinburgh Fringe 2025. Shiv brings his passion for engineering and comedy to the stage with warmth and charm, enjoying making science funny and approachable for many audiences.
Shalaka Kurup
Shalaka is an Indian stand-up comedian and writer based in London. Known for her sharp observational humour and distinctively deadpan style, she has quickly made her mark on the UK comedy circuit. A doctor by education and a comedian by choice, Shalaka has earned several accolades including, Funny Women Finalist, winning the West End New Act of the Year, runner up Brighton Komedia New Act of the year and second runner-up at the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year.
Her critically acclaimed debut show, Get A Grip, premiered at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She has starred on Comedy Central Live Season 3, Jokes Only A…Can Tell (Channel 4 Digital) Asian Network Comedy (BBC) Arts Hour Comedy Special (BBC) and Sunday Morning Live (BBC1).
James Connolly
James Connolly is Associate Professor of Modern French History at UCL. He’s been performing stand-up comedy intermittently since November 2024, including four Science Showoff-related events (LOLs in Translation, and Science Showoff Stands Up for Climate Comedy), as well as open-mic slots. He weaves true stories, life experiences, or historical facts with comedy, especially puns.
Oliver Broadbent
Eiffel Over is the alter-ego of Oliver Broadbent — lapsed engineer, part-time clown and full-time enthusiast for playful thinking about the future.
Through comedy songs about data, buildings and the human condition, he explores a strange genre he calls magical technical realism.
