Mhairi Vari 2024

“For over two years I have been resident artist and volunteer at Crossness with the Engines Trust.  I have spent much time travelling along the Thames path alongside my activities within the building. More recently I became artist in residence at the Brunel Museum too.”

This work takes in aspects of the journey between these two historical, industrial locations – exploring the never-ending movement of the river as contrast to the slow decay of these significant sites where perpetual processes of restoration and preservation occur through continual care and repair…

Artist Bio :

Mhairi Vari is a multi-modal Scottish artist based in London. She started out in theatre, trained in Fine Art sculpture in Birmingham followed by postgrad at the Royal Academy Schools. She is currently undertaking a Phd within the Sound/Image Research Centre at the University of Greenwich.

Through process led practice, rather than construction by design, installations engage with the given physical context and evolve through time. Vari has a history of making work in non-standard spaces: from damp basements and agricultural barns to world heritage sites. She has made work for St Augustine’s Tower, the oldest building in Hackney, East London and is the only artist ever to have installed work on the exterior of the iconic, hi-tech Lloyds building.
