A5 greeting card with envelope. Taken from a watercolour by Sir Marc Brunel, owned by the museum.

The Thames Tunnel, 1835 from a watercolour by Sir Marc Brunel (1835-1849). It is almost a family portrait. Isambard Kingdom Brunel is pictured being rowed up the river by his friend William Hawes. In the tunnel below, an elderly Marc Brunel walks aided by a cane and on the right, Marc’s daughter Sophie is accompanied by her husband Ben Hawes. Hawes later became MP for Lambeth and as Chairman of the Tunnel Company sold the Tunnel to the East London Railway.
