Greeting Card / Fancy Fair
A5 greeting card with envelope. The annual Fancy Fair held in the tunnel helped to maintain interest and bring in revenue for the struggling Thames Tunnel Company.
Taken from a black and white drawing dated 1858, a representation of the Fancy Fair held in the Thames Tunnel. Once interest in simply walking from Rotherhithe to Wapping below the Thames had started to wane, the Company encouraged paying visitors back to the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ with souvenir stalls and an annual Fancy Fair.
