Greeting Card / Head of the shaft
A5 greeting card with envelope. A depiction of the works at the head of the Thames Tunnel in 1826.
The works at the head of the tunnel shaft, taken from a watercolour by George Yates dated 1826. This is one year after the shaft was sunk and work started on the tunnel. It depicts the wooden and glass structure on top of the shaft and what appears to be a manually driven personnel lift!
